Parramatta. SMH supports rail link

The Epping-Parramatta link is a fully developed project ready for immediate work, and will be an extremely useful short-cut in the metropolitan rail system, enabling workers from the west to get to jobs in the knowledge-industry belt north of the harbour and Parramatta River, The Sydney Morning Herald said in an editorial supporting the link over the north-west and south-west links. Coalition leader, Barry O'Farrell, has signalled his disagreement with the allocation of $2.1 billion of Canberra money to build the Epping to Parramatta rail link, a deal likely to be approved soon by the Premier, Kristina Keneally. Mr O'Farrell would do better by pledging to build the north-west (Epping to Rouse Hill) line and the south-west (Leppington to Glenfield) line as soon as possible, and demand that Canberra properly helps fund this essential infrastructure for Australia's main city, the editorial said.

While the Epping to Parramatta Rail link is a good link, when you analyse Sydney, and its spatial form and network, this is not the most important link we need at the moment. Just because it links into Parramatta, does not necessarily improve the position of Parramatta within Sydney. What it actually does is improve the position of Epping and make it more important than Parramatta.

Critical Links we need include:

1. A North-West line, which connects the growing population that does not have a high capacity transport link, and this will then facilitate greater local employment at station nodes, reducing regional commuting, and encouraging reverse commuting.

2. A North-East line, which could serve as a regional cross-connector, providing an alternative to going all the way into the City. It would start around Dee Why, go through Frenchs Forest, Chatswood , Olympic Park, Strathfield (not Burwood) and then to Hurstville. This cross connnects all inbound lines to the City and provides an alternate link for cross-regional journeys.

3. Then the Leppington Link should be continued west further with greater urban development focused on stations. OR

3. Then the Epping Parramatta Link could be developed.

The transport planning at present shows no understanding of how Sydney work as a system and network.
